Just a Pinch of Salt Please

Sermon Text: Matthew 5:13-16

As I’ve stated the last two weeks, during the month of January we’re re-examining the basics of our faith.  And I don’t think there’s anymore basic a statement that Jesus made about how our faith should be exercised than this short little passage from Matthew’s Gospel.

There’s an old saying that we’ve all heard at one time or another: “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.”  Nobody disagrees with that, right?  It’s quite true.  However, I did overhear an addendum to the expression not too long ago.  It went like this: “Though you can lead a horse to water and yet not make him drink, it is possible to salt his hay a little and encourage his drinking.”

“SALT” ... that’s what I want to talk with you about today.  We hear a lot of talk about being “the light of the world,” especially around Christmas.  And my benediction for the last several years has dealt with the Christ-Light that each of us possesses.  But do you remember Jesus also said, “You are the salt of the earth.”  What exactly was He implying in that statement?...Read full sermon here (PDF).
