Mary and Martha – 7/18/2010

Sermon text: Luke 10: 38-42

The title of my sermon today is “Mary and Martha” but I could have easily called it “Night and Day” because Mary and Martha were as different as night and day. Let’s take a look at these two women … who, very likely, were among Jesus’ closest friends … and see what they have to teach us about our lives.Read full sermon here (PDF).

Today, while my mother was in surgery, I spent some time in the Hospital Chapel. I decided to spend some time in reflection and reading scripture. I randomly opened the bible and read the passages about Mary and Martha.

A few hours later, I decided to conduct an internet search for a welcoming Church in my new city, Jacksonville, FL. I looked at the websites for several churches. Eventually, I visited the Lakewood site.

I do not count it as coincidence that the sermon available to read was precisely about Mary and Martha. And I cannot help but smile at God's gentle guidance evident in the theme of the sermon - hospitality.

I love the sermon and I look forward to visiting in a near future.
