Education

Children (age 3 - 5th grade)

Children are a cherished part of this church family!
We are dedicated to their spiritual nurture and development.

Preschoolers (ages 3-5):   Sunday School from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

Kindergarten - 3rd grade:  Mission and Service from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.;

Young Disciples from approximately 11:20 - 12:00 noon.

4th and 5th graders:         Sunday School from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.

Read more about each of these programs below.

Children in Worship

Children are welcome in all of our worship services. During the 11:00 a.m. service, there is a “Time with Children,” after which children are invited to go to Young Disciples or to stay with their parents in worship. Approximately quarterly, children help to lead worship by being liturgists and ushers. 4th and 5th graders are invited to help in worship as acolytes on a rotating schedule.

Sunday School for Preschoolers (ages 3 – 5)

Preschoolers attend Sunday School from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon during the worship service. They follow the Rock Solid curriculum, learn Bible stories and play with a group of dedicated and caring teachers and high school volunteers.

Sunday School for Kindergarten – 3rd graders

Kindergarteners through 3rd graders have two opportunities. While their parents and older siblings are engaged in Sunday School from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m., these young people participate in our Kids in Mission and Service program, which provides activity-based learning about mission and service in the church. This age group then attends Young Disciples, a time for spiritual development for children. Children attend the beginning of the 11:00 a.m. worship service and then are escorted to the classroom building after the Time with Children. The curriculum is a mix of the Rock Solid curriculum, learning Bible stories and getting to know their friends in the faith. We focus on worship topics that help children understand worship and prepare them for future participation in the full worship service.

Sunday School for 4th-5th graders

4th and 5th graders have Sunday school from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the classroom building each week. This way, they are able to attend the entire 8:30 or 11:00 a.m. worship service or serve as acolytes during 11:00 a.m. worship. The Sunday School class follows the Rock Solid curriculum using stories, games and crafts to learn the lessons of our faith.

Nursery

The nursery provides care in a safe and fun environment for children ages 4 and under from 8:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Sundays. The nursery is led by longtime coordinator, Pam Connor, who is helped by youth and adult volunteers. Child care also is provided during Wednesday night dinners.

Vacation Bible School

We are proud of our long-running VBS program, held for a week each summer, usually in early June. Many volunteers transform the church into a fun and playful learning environment with music, skits, games, and stories for children ages 3 through 5th grade. Recent VBS themes have included Discovery Canyon and Power Lab.

Special Events

Special events that are fun for children have included Bingo Nights, Trunk or Treat at Halloween, the Spring Picnic with a bounce house, the Christmas Eve pageant and Live Nativity and many others.

Child’s Play Preschool

Teaching Kids in Faith, Hope and Love

Child’s Play Preschool is a ministry of Lakewood Presbyterian Church, supported by an active community of teachers, school parents and church members.

Our Philosophy

The educational program of our preschool is designed to help children become active and enthusiastic learners in a loving and Christian atmosphere through developmental play. In their early years, play allows children to explore the world around them by using their senses (touching, tasting, listening, smelling and looking). Play provides the foundation for academic or “school” learning. Play is the work of young children.

Play enables our staff to achieve the goals of our early childhood curriculum in social, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual development.

Our Educational Program

· Unit approach for subject matter to include math, science, reading readiness, dramatic play and outdoor play based on the Creative Curriculum by Teaching Resources.

· Weekly chapel program.

· Twice weekly music and movement.

· Art enrichment.

· Science enrichment.

· Weekly library enrichment including lending library.

· Field trips and in-school enrichment visits.

· A dedicated and loving staff with exceptional experience.

· Many opportunities are available for a close relationship among staff, parents and children, so each child feels a bond among home, school and faith. Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged!

Our Schedule

School hours:  9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
